Considered part and parcel of the last great wave of 4AD, and with one foot planted in the soil of Americana, Tarnation were a force of sometimes lovely and lilting tones that even absorbed the attention of Rolling Stone writers. They are back, unfastening a sometimes symphonic variation of the same caliber, though it feels more ethereal than earthy, more singer-songwriter than sultry sawdust odes. Sure, “Bitter Rose” gets close to the checkered red tablecloth vibe, with slightly bouncing piano, low-key drumming, and sweet melancholy (“if I stay in your heart/will you set me free”), though she does use some empty lines, comparing her feelings to deep blue seas, etc. So, it may not feel novel, but it does simmer with warmth under the skin.
